Pedro Cabrita Reis was born in Lisbon in 1956. Internationally recognized, his work became crucial to the understanding of sculpture from the 1980s onwards. The idiosyncrasies of the philosophical and poetic speech of his creations are apparent in a variety of media: painting, sculpture, photography and drawing. Cabrita Reis creates installations using materials he has found and manufactured objects, subjecting them to construction processes, replicating gestures and actions that are essential in everyday life. The pieces evoke space and memory, transpose the visual and reach a metaphorical dimension.
He has participated, among others, in the following international exhibitions: Documenta IX and XIV in Kassel in 1992 and 2017; 21st and 24th São Paulo Biennials, in 1994 and 1998; Venice Biennale in 1997 and 2003. In 2013 he presented “A Remote Whisper”, 55th Biennale de Venezia and in 2009 he participated in the Xème Biennale de Lyon, “The Spectacle of the Everyday”. In 2022, he presented “Les Trois Grâces” at the Tuileries, supported by the Louvre Museum, and at the 59th Venice Biennale Cabrita Reis presents “Field” at the Chiesa di San Fantin.
